Media Field Strategist
with a focus on Spanish Language Media

Position Summary
The Media Field Strategist (MFS) is a combination of media strategist, field organizer and public relations individual. He or she will have the primary responsibility of building and sustaining relationships with the LGBT Spanish Language News Media and allied organizations and working in several states to assist organizations with their media work. The MFS is also responsible for monitoring and responding to print and broadcast media in several states as it pertains to GLAAD`s mission and current strategic plan. Additionally, this position fosters GLAAD’s role as a community resource nationwide.
Responsibilities
• Assists in the planning and implementation of GLAAD`s communications plan, ensuring the growth of GLAAD’s outreach to Spanish-language news and entertainment media and the Latina/o community
• Develops and maintains relationships with Latina/o and other community organizations and leaders in various states
• Manages the organization`s Spanish-language media strategies and outreach efforts
• Meets and executes editorial board meetings with the Latin American desks of the Associated Press, Reuters, EFE and other wires as appropriate
• Helps manage training efforts and outreach to Latina/o community groups
• Recommends and develops initiatives around Spanish-language media work
• Supervises and trains Spanish-language media volunteers and interns as needed
• Develops and implements strategic plans and priorities within assigned states
• Connects local activists and individuals with GLAAD’s campaign work within assigned states
• Maintains active contact with state and community LGBT organizations, giving media support and formal trainings when appropriate
• Produces and implements media plans for assigned local and statewide groups
• Represents GLAAD on coalitions and campaigns for LGBT equality within assigned states
• Monitors legislative, judicial, electoral and social issues and climate as it pertains to LGBT people within assigned states
• Monitors public opinion data and media coverage in order to support the development of effective messaging for specific campaigns and situations
• Maintains and grows current contacts, or access to contacts/spokespeople, for regional LGBT and mainstream media outlets and journalists
• Plans, writes, edits, and proofs written news materials to include releases, alerts, letters to media professionals, blog postings and other documents as needed
• Prepares weekly progress, quarterly review and other reports as requested
• Approximately 30% Travel to various states
• The work of GLAAD resembles a campaign-style work environment; there is always a high level of energy, excitement and activity for everyone in the organization; preparing for the next events/activities to accomplish our important media advocacy work, fighting the defamation against the LGBT community and changing hearts and minds about our need for full equality. Staff members are expected to consciously and continuously promote the mission, values, programs, and impact of the organization when presented with opportunities for participating in membership development and reaching out to personal connections on behalf of GLAAD.

Qualifications
• Required: Candidate must be fluent in both English and Spanish. Fluent oral, verbal, reading and writing Spanish-language skills are a must;
• Required: 3+ years of experience/proven record in ability to establish and maintain rapport with widely varied ethnic, occupational and social groups;
• Required: 3+ years of experience in community organizing or equivalent line of work
• Required: Degree and experience in journalism, communications, or public relations;
• Required: Demonstrated bicultural competency;
• Required: Valid state driver’s license and ability to drive;
• Strongly Preferred: Experience in working with Latina/o/People of Color/LGBT community-based organizations
• Leadership skills and experience;
• Strong written and oral communication skills;
• Professional demeanor and appearance;
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver on aggressive, results-oriented work plans;
• Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter
• Working knowledge and understanding of LGBT and people of color political, cultural and social issues
• Ability to work under pressure
• Willingness to travel

Supervision
The Media Strategist has a dual reporting relationship to the Director of Spanish Language Media and to the Director of Field and Community Media Field Strategy and has no direct supervisory responsibilities, except perhaps an intern or fellow from time to time.
Compensation
Salary commensurate with experience brought to position/organization. Benefits include: 403(b) retirement plan; escalating vacation beginning with three weeks+; Paid sick, personal days and holidays; and Organization paid health benefits for employees including medical, dental, vision, flex spending accounts, flexible work arrangements, employee assistance program and life and long-term disability insurance.
